The very first webcam in Kakadu National Park just launched!
I heard about it yesterday and of course I went straight over to have a look…
“Australian Outback map” is one of the terms that many of you type into my search box, so I figured I better do something about the perceived lack of a map of the Outback Though it’s not easy…
How do I explain it? The Outback is kind of, well, more or less all of Australia…
But, never one to shy away from a challenge, I did the best I could: I made an Australian Outback map for you
Here are some more pictures of the best Australian beaches The best in my opinion anyway…
Of course all those beaches are in areas that qualify as Outback Because what is one of the main criteria when assessing a beach? Right, the amount of people All of these beaches you can have more or less to yourself if you like
(If you prefer crowded beaches and big mobs of people then you landed on the wrong site I’m afraid…)
Darwin has an interesting history, which is visible everywhere Its location on a peninsula, surrounded by ocean on three sides, makes for a great tropical lifestyle And it has many other attractions that will keep you busy for a while
Lets have a look at what there is to see and do for those who have a few days to spend in Darwin Quite a bit as it turns out, this is a long page…
This is a new page in the Outback Photo Gallery: some of my favourite camping spots, in my favourite part of the country, at my favourite time of the year…
I found some much better maps of Ayers Rock than what I previously had on that page, so I’ve updated the page
To finally connect Darwin and Adelaide by train was a hundred year old dream come true
The new Ghan travels across the Australian Outback heart in a mere two nights, a trip that took up to two months in the days of the legendary “Afghan Express”
This page tells you a bit about the old days of this Australian legend, the construction of the new track, and about where and how you can get on board
Is it possible to travel around Australia hitchhiking? Is it a good idea? What about hitchhiking in the Australian Outback? Is there even anybody there to give you a ride?
The question comes up every now and again in Australia travel forums and the answer is usually, “Oh no, don’t do it Too dangerous, not enough traffic, and the backpacker killings, yada, yada…”
I have hitchhiked up and down and around Australia many times and I thought, just for some balance, I’d tell you a bit about my experiences
Darwin is the only capital city in Australia where you can cross the main street blindfolded at any time of the day
True
But you don’t have to walk if you don’t want to…
Steve Irwin, known around the world as the Croodile Hunter, was killed while diving of the Queensland coast He was struck by a stingray in the chest and apparently died from heart arrest
It seems ironic that a man who had spent his life alternately wrestling, hugging and protecting some of the most dangerous and venomous creatures of the world, should be killed by something considered not dangerous…
Nobody here can recall any stingray attacks that ever caused trouble People get stung when they stand on them, and it hurts, but that’s about it There have only been 17 fatal stingray attacks worldwide
Of course none of us would ever get friendly enough with a big bullray to give it a chance to strike us near the heart I guess it is a somewhat fitting death
It doesn’t matter if you were a fan of the Crocodile Hunter, or like me have been cringing []
